7 Cs in Writing

The 7 Cs are the basic principles of writing. These principles should be kept in mind in all formal writing. These principles provide guidelines for the content and style Of presentation.

1. Clarity

It refers to the clarity of thought and expression. The writer should make sure that the thoughts are properly arranged and expressed in logical way. The information should be clear and understandable to the reader. In oral communication, simple language should be used. Conveying the message from the sender to the receiver accurately is the purpose of clarity.

2. Completeness

Completeness is the sum total of information. It is an important part of effective writing. Incomplete message irritates the reader. It should not miss any important details. The contents of the message should be checked to verify that no important information is left out. Also, read what is skimming.

3. Conciseness

Conciseness is the brevity of thought and words. If the message gets lengthy, it becomes boring and loses attention. Conciseness doesn’t mean that important items may be ignored. All necessary contents are to be provided but as briefly as possible. What can be avoided is the repetition, verbosity, and unnecessary details.

4. Consideration

The writer should consider the reader while preparing a piece of writing. The taste, attitude, and mindset of the reader must be kept in mind.

5. Correctness

A writing should be correct in language, organization of thoughts, grammar, spellings, formatting and contents etc. There should be no errors and mistakes in a piece of writing.

6. Courtesy

Courtesy means politeness and decency. A writing may be grammatically accurate still it annoys the reader if it lacks courtesy. Statements of courtesy should be added according to the needs and requirements of the document. Apologies should be made where due and thanks generously for favours.

7. Concreteness

The writing should be concrete means that it should not be lose in its form. It should not be slipshod, poorly arranged and vague. It should be specific, vivid and definite in its composition and presentation. Read more
